Undernourished St. Bernard Discovered in Neglected Home, Tipping the Scales at a Mere 80 Pounds

Meet Stu, a dog who went through a horrible ordeal that no animal should ever go through. This is his heartbreaking tale.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis came to the rescue of Stu when he was discovered abandoned in a crate in an old, rundown house. It’s devastating that someone would leave their own pet behind to suffer like that.

Left to languish in his own waste, Stu was terribly malnourished and severely dehydrated. The poor pup fought hard to survive in such dire conditions.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis recently came across a heartbreaking case involving an adult St. Bernard named Stu. Despite the healthy weight range for a St. Bernard being between 120 and 180 pounds, Stu weighed a mere 43 pounds when he was found by the rescue team. He was in a desperate state, soaked in urine, extremely malnourished, dehydrated, and too feeble to even lift his head. The image of Stu curled up conveys the distressing condition he was in before being rescued.

When he was brought in, we gave him a bath, raised his body temperature, provided fluids, and fed him a small meal. His body was in need of calories and nutrients. The first night was nerve-wracking as we weren’t sure if he would pull through,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared in their post. His blood tests showed irregularities, and all we could do was have faith and wish for him to make it through the night. This meal was likely his first in the shelter, and quite possibly his first in a significant amount of time.

Stu demonstrated his strong fighting spirit and unwavering determination, emerging victorious. Despite facing a challenging night, he enthusiastically greeted his rescuers the following morning with a wagging tail and affectionate kisses. The heartwarming image of a woman giving her dog a loving kiss on the head captures the bond between them.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis witnessed a heartwarming moment as the once frail dog mustered the strength to stand up and greet everyone, igniting a glimmer of hope for his recovery. It was clear that all he needed was some food, nutrients, time, and of course, love.

As the days passed, Stu began to show small signs of improvement, yet the road to full recovery still stretched ahead. Despite his hardships, his gentle and caring nature never wavered, endearing him to the rescue staff, volunteers, and countless supporters worldwide.

Thanks to the overwhelming outpouring of love and support for Stu, the rescue team was able to quickly find him a wonderful foster home where he could continue his journey towards healing and happiness.
